NBC 5 profiles MedStar’s sophisticated mapping and road network utility system that not only provides immediate information of traffic delays, the system automatically dispatches ambulances to calls that can get to the emergency scene fastest, even when the fastest ambulance may be a little farther away, but can get to the scene faster than the ambulance that is ‘closer’, but may have traffic issues getting to the call.
The same process is used for transport to a hospital – which allows crews to route to the hospital the quickest route, even when it may be a little farther, to avoid traffic delays.
This advanced system also allows MedStar to ‘close’ road segments when we are notified by TxDOT or other authorities about road closures (under construction forever!) when we are notified in advance. This will route ambulance around the road closures starting at the pre-scheduled time.
